From the Holiday Farm, there are any number of activities for our guests to enjoy, in and around the Susa Valley, such as spending some time practicing their preferred sport, enjoying some simple relaxation and physical well-being, or visiting a few of the places of historical, artistic or cultural interest to be found in this area.
Fortifications
Over the centuries, the entire Western Alpine region has experienced a veritable flurry of construction of fortifications, designed to prevent foreign armies from travelling down the alpine valleys on their way to distant battlefields. In this regard, the Susa valley has always been of strategic importance, a factor that is reflected in the number of examples of military architecture that are still standing in this area today.
The linguistic heritage of this area testifies to a commonality of culture on the two opposite sides of the Alps: Occitan and French-Provençal, which are both still alive and well today and practiced by the local population. Heritage museums have been established in order to safeguard and teach people about the social and economic life of the valleys, specifically the handcrafts (stone craft and woodwork), the materials (costumes, typical objects) and the customs (languages, folksongs, festivals and traditions).
In this regard, we wish to specifically point out the following:
CE.S.DO.ME.O, the
Colombano Romean Heritage Museum, the
Terre di Confine Heritage Museum,
the Bardonecchia Public Ethnography Museum (Museum secretarial office: 0122 999350), and the wood and stone carving schools of Chiomonte, Salbertrand, Bardonecchia, Melezet and Cesana.
Archaeology
The numerous physical traces left behind for posterity by the area’s previous human inhabitants over a period of some six thousand years can be viewed by taking the archaeological route. Some of the earliest signs of human presence are to be found at Chiomonte, Vaie and on the slopes of Rocciamelone Mountain. Susa itself remains at the very centre of the route because there lie some of the most important Roman and Celtic remains to be found anywhere in the entire Susa Valley area, such as the:
Maddalena Museum and Archaeological site and the
Susa Archaeological Sites.
Religious Art
The route that winds its way past the abbeys and monasteries remains a special feature of the Susa Valley area. In fact, since way back in the Middle Ages, this area has been characterised by a large number of Monastic Orders that have profoundly moulded its culture and the social life:
San Michele Abbey,
Novalesa Abbey,
Diocesan Sacred Art Museum.
